At least 4 or 5 different systems were used. I have uncovered two of them to a reasonable extent; both of which ran concurrently to each other during this time period: This system showed its face in I have named it accordingly , and was phased out in mid Evidence indicates that a handful of ‘ ’71 frames – or their lugs, depending on when the stamping was done – may not have been released from the factory until , and were consequently decaled as models. This is the only explanation I can suggest regarding this issue.

Hello and Welcome, About a month ago a friend asked me if I would be interested in restoring his son’s vintage mountain bike. I had already seen the bike and remembered thinking it sure would clean up nice with that chrome frame. So of course I said yes. Rust on chrome does not photograph well.

The Raleigh Chopper is a children’s bicycle, a wheelie bike, manufactured and marketed in the s by the Raleigh Bicycle Company of Nottingham, England. Its unique design became a cultural icon and is fondly remembered by many who grew up in that period.

Some of the mid ‘s straight guage frames had serial numbers starting with a single letter which was towards the end of the alphabet. This new system applied to the high-end i. Reynolds frames, and involved the placing of a character at the beginning of the serial number. The character began at the start of the alphabet, and indicated year of manufacture. Detail about the numerals that follow the alphabet are sketchy, and are presumably sequential serial numbers of some kind.

Although the Sports Model was the original backbone of the range, it was the Raleigh 20 which really set the sales records. Slightly cruder than the original Nottingham version, the 20 was nevertheless a sturdy machine which suffered very few problems over its long production life. It was made of local steel, and the main tube was of slightly smaller diameter than the original.

In another departure, the bracing tubes from the main tube to the bottom bracket were missing. This last feature allowed the production of a fully detachable version which was, I think, unique to NZ.

May 29,  · Hello and Welcome, I am restoring this 10 speed Nottingham Raleigh Sprite for Brian. Brian is the fellow who purchased my GIANT Attraction mountain bike earlier this spring. This Raleigh was apparently left outside for an extended period of time.

Bicycle — A bicycle, often called a bike or cycle, is a human-powered, pedal-driven, single-track vehicle, having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other. He had shown the prototypes to Raleigh, who, despite some initial interest, declined to take up the design in They later admitted that they were very wrong! Market research conducted by Dr Moulton confirmed that the concept was a good one and would be commercially successful. Dr Moulton reluctantly set about manufacturing the bicycle himself, initially at a new factory at Bradford-on-Avon, and later outsourced to the BMC factory at Kirkby.

The Moulton bicycle was a huge success, and Raleigh soon found themselves playing catch up. Their answer, launched in , was the RSW

US Raleighs from the East: Raleigh USA There was a time in America when all Raleighs – except specially ordered Team Replicas not to be confused with the Team USA, an mid-level marketing tool which now exists in the present day to amuse greedy internet “antique” dealers and Craigslisters – were made in Japan or Taiwan.

In comparison to their English counterparts of the time – which were often brazed together with all the loving care of a British Leyland unionist – the Raleighs from the East were a notable step up, if a bit soulless behind the handlebar though a highly subjective point. Unfortunately, the Raleigh USA venture will forever be known as having been a venture involving the management of the subsidiary by the American bicycle manufacturer, Huffy.

If you’ve ever been within 20 feet of an average Huffy, you’ll need not have to ask why this fact continues to tarnish the image and aura surrounding the marquee. But for whatever these bikes lacked in soul or exalted managerial history, they made up for in sheer flashiness. Though the American lineup had been completely transitioned to Raleigh USA by , it wasn’t until that Raleigh USA’s top four roadbike offerings excluding the Team Replicas took on a look that defies all visions of “British restraint.

July 21, Not a Typical DL-1 Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to befriend some very serious bicycle collectors. And I understand enough about how they operate to know it is unlikely that I will ever be one of them. I have a strong aversion to online auctions. I am unwilling to spend my weekends traveling across state lines to visit bike swaps and barn sales. Space is an issue.

A decent set used on Middleweight bikes. The tires would read 26×1. Jaguars and other Schwinn middleweights. It is impossible to find original middleweight fenders like these so I decided to carry these to fill in the gap for those people who do not need original fenders. The top hole on the rear fender is not drilled so this set would be good for many different bikes even the Tandems and you can drill the hole to match your frame.

Determining the Age of a Raleigh

Tuesday, December 19, American Flyers: Export Models To cyclist the world over the name ‘Carlton’ stands supreme for hand-made cycle design, construction and finish. It is Carlton policy, however, to supply our machines only through Carlton dealers, who have been selected for their interest in cycling and their ability to give satisfactory service. A genuine hand-made cycle is lively and responsive.

The acquisition of Carlton by Raleigh in marked a new era for the company in building and selling top-end racing bicycles. It led, eventually, to its sponsoring the first British team to win the Tour de France, and for the first and only time, with a British designed and built bicycle.

Raleigh is arguably one of the most recognised bicycle companies in the world. Dating back to its UK inception the late ‘s and producing childhood dream bikes such as the Chopper and Burner, they have a rich history and have played a major part in the world of cycling.

Tuesday, September 30, Raleigh Sports, the conclusion. After the initial long ride with the Raleigh, I realized two things. My legs were definitely not used to riding a regular diamond frame anymore and I really liked the way it rode, but it was missing something. This bike was definitely not right for the upright cruiser position. Maybe it’s the skinny tires For me those are skinny, but I know some dudes who find those tires huge! I hang out with a bunch that ride fixies and I must admit that I love how vintage road steel comes alive again with modern wheels, components and how attractive the purest form of the bike is.

One thing that I find very cool is how they use flipped and cut drop bars.

Contact Raleigh www. Their range over the years has encompassed all types of bike, from the iconic Chopper to a Tour de France-winning road bike for Joop Zoetemelk in The AIRlite range comprises four models, with the being second from top. The build The AIRlite frame is a fairly basic double-butted alloy number fitted out with an aluminium fork. But the Raleigh does sport mudguard eyelets — sensible on a bike that will probably see more training than racing miles. Finish quality is nice and tidy, and the simple red, white and black colour scheme is classy.

My point is this, if you take a look at http: Paul Trainer Well Well, I have just had the micrometer up against my computer screen and yep defiantly not the correct number.

Monday, 12 October The trouble is that if there was any justice in the world the world’s favourite hub gear would be called “Reilly”. William Reilly invented a very successful 2 speed hub gear at the turn of the 20th century. He designed the 3 speed hub gear soon after, but was prevented from patenting it in his own name by the conditions of his contract.

With its frame dating to and considered “quirky” in its handling by some, it was time to replace and upgrade the Raleigh Professional by the mid s. The Bike Boom had run its course and sales of top-end racing bikes fell back to their merit rather than fad or frenzy.

This Raleigh was apparently left outside for an extended period of time. It was badly rusted to the point where I had serious doubts about whether or not it was worth restoring. The first thing I did was take it apart and make sure the bottom bracket and headset were serviceable. As it turns out they are both savable I may need to replace the bracket spindle or axle. And it will no longer have a chain ring guard or at least the same chain ring guard And I may need to replace all the bearings.

But all this is manageable, I guess. Here is the Sprite looking as if it doubled as a boat anchor for a couple summers. Mt first instinct was to pass simply because it needed so much replaced. But I decided to see how much I could replace using salvaged components that I already have in the shop.
